Day 39/100: Annie Waring
Encouraging an Artist Whose Sense of Beauty and Balance Crosses Art Forms
As part of my #100daysofencouragement project, I recently discovered UK artist Annie Waring — a painter whose floral still lifes stopped me in my tracks as I was scrolling through Instagram. What a gift it’s been to see her work! Her creative career brings together two of my favorite things — tableware and evocative paintings of flowers.
Annie studied printed textile design at Middlesex Polytechnic (UK) in the early 1980's. After graduation, she began designing and hand-painting her own ranges of bone china tableware (under her maiden name, Doherty). Her work was featured in high-end retailers, including Liberty of London, Harrods & Thomas Goode in the UK & Henri Bendel in New York. She also designed exclusive ranges for Marks and Spencer & other retailers.
Recently, she returned to painting -- which she describes as the root of all her design work. Today, she is fascinated with the still life genre. Living in rural East Sussex (UK), overlooking the beautiful Durwell Valley, she finds her sources of inspiration close to home.
Working predominantly in oils & occasionally watercolors from her home studio, she enjoys painting simple objects from her home and garden, as well as the wildflowers of the surrounding countryside. Seasonal changes in light and vegetation captivate her.
Whether she is painting flowers in a simple jar or ceramic pot, pieces of fruit, or a collection of ceramic vessels, she strives to capture their essence. She portrays light, reflection, and the textures of negative space powerfully to create a sense of belonging. As a viewer, I feel that I am welcomed into her gratitude and groundedness.
