Today, I am celebrating Kristy Andrews and Sarah Hill David. Both of these women have learned to let the expressive process of painting free them from perfectionistic demands. Their joyous, colorful paintings are a testimony to that liberation!
And, I’m thrilled that both of them will be joining me in the upcoming Square Foot Show: In Bloom with Debbie Miller & Friends, sponsored by Canadian artist Julia Veenstra and her partners, starting on March 30, 2022.
Kristy Andrews
Kristy was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and currently lives in Northport, Alabama.
She grew up in a family of artists, watching and painting with her grandfather. Though she continued to paint off and on throughout the years, it wasn't until the pandemic began that she decided to really share her work with others.
Kristy is inspired by the beauty of nature and tries to capture it using acrylics, oil pastels & pencil marks. Because she paints expressively and intuitively, she had to learn to give up on the idea of perfection. Once she did, she found that the process of expression became a therapeutic source of enjoyment.
She notes that colorful flowers have a wonderful way of brightening the day. And her paintings brighten ours!
Sarah Hill David
My other feature artist today, is Sarah Hill David. She was born and raised in Unionville, Ontario but moved to British Columbia 25 years ago. She currently lives in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island.
Though she can’t remember a time when she didn’t paint, Sarah began painting in earnest and selling her art 7 years ago. She prefers working on panels in acrylics and mixed media.
In a work’s initial stage, she paints with her hands, intuitively choosing colors and shapes based on the natural world surrounding her and her feelings in the moment. As she works, each mark is laid down in response to the one before. She then draws into those shapes with oil pastel & pencil. Slowly the subjects reveal themselves and the flowers are coaxed forth, blossoming on the canvas as she paints around them.
Sarah notes that being creative, inspiring others and connecting people is what makes her heart sing. That, and dipping in the ocean each day. (Oh, the fortitude!)
